Emaar Properties

Emaar Properties (Emaar), a real estate development company based in the United Arab Emirates. Investment Corporation Dubai, the sovereign wealth fund of Dubai, and Dubai’s Ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, are the two main owners of the company.

Emaar Properties Dubai is one of the biggest multi-faceted construction companies in UAE, having developed and constructed the larger Burj Khalifa – the greatest skyscraper across the globe.

As per reports, more than 34,500 housing units commenced construction in 2002 and to this date have been delivered by Emaar Development. Emaar holds over 22% of freehold residencies in Dubai Development Directorates which makes them the biggest developers in Dubai.

It was established in 1997 and was incorporated by Mohamed Alabbar. The chairman of the company has decided to diversify and expand operations to the hospitality and retail sector. Emaar made the announcement of their newest plan to construct a Dubai marina in 1999. Emaar Properties was the pioneer in the property market as the first Arabian company to list on the Dubai Financial market and in 2001, Emaar started its first phase of construction by awarding joint ventures for the three of six apartment towers.

The company revealed its blue prints for the mega multi-use area, referred to as ‘Downtown Dubai’, to the public in 2003.

This project included two constructions: Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world, and The Dubai Mall, which is the largest shopping mall in the world.

Another part of Dubai developed by Emaar was the Opera District which contains features such as the Dubai Opera House, the first purpose-built opera house in the city.

The Dubai Mall was inaugurated in 2008 and the Burj Khalifa followed two years later in 2010. By that time in the year 2014, Emaar had over $11.4 billion in real estate assets.

Emaar Properties Dubai Fountain began operating in the spring of 2009, and ever since then it has held the record as the tallest performing fountain in the world. Besides these, Emaar also built Arabian Ranches, Dubai Marina, The Greens, The Meadows, The Lakes, The Springs and other communities in Dubai.

The expected completion was set for 2021 at the earliest. Tower construction was stalled due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Project developer Emaar Properties suggested a minimum height of 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) but was reported to have reduced it to less than the height of Dubai’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in February 2024.

The tower is under construction in a waterfront region of Dubai Creek Harbour.

While company’s flagship development remains the Downtown Dubai, it has developed several award winning communities such as Arabian Ranches, Emirates Living, Dubai Marina, and Emaar Beachfront.
